My second objection is governance. Riot Games writes the rules, runs the tournament and benefits commercially from the broadcast. Announcing a rule in advance is transparency, yes. But when transparency is produced, enforced and marketed by the same institution, where does transparency end? The question I have raised about VAR in football for seven years — why can't the stadium audience hear the referee's reasoning — returns here. The audience still stands outside, except now the call belongs to the publisher, not the referee.

My third objection is not about capital but infrastructure. Group draws, seeding, audiences, conduct codes, an international calendar — someone had to build all of that scaffolding.
